Lagos, Nigeria — October 15, 2024: In a significant community outreach event, the Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade, led by Brigadier General Olawale Mathew Oyekola, hosted Mrs. Zainab Aliyu Farouk Mijinyawa, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) 81 Division Chapter. The visit included a familiarization tour and a special widows’ empowerment programme designed to provide relief to families within the military cantonment.
Mrs. Mijinyawa was warmly welcomed by the Brigade Commander and members of both NAOWA and NASWA 9 Brigade Zone. After touring the NAOWA Schools and the 9 Brigade Medical Center, she participated in a Widows’ Empowerment Programme organized by NAOWA 9 Brigade Zonal Coordinator, Mrs. Olubukola Olayinka Oyekola, in collaboration with honorary members of the 9 Brigade Officers’ Mess.
During the empowerment event, widows from the cantonment received essential food items such as noodles, rice, cooking oil, and other necessities. Additionally, 17 children of the widows were awarded scholarships covering their tuition for three terms at the Command Day Secondary School, showcasing NAOWA’s dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable military families.
The event, held at the 9 Brigade headquarters, was aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by these widows, especially in light of the country’s current economic challenges. Mrs. Mijinyawa’s visit emphasized the importance of community support and highlighted NAOWA’s ongoing efforts to uplift and assist military families across Nigeria.
The Chairperson and her entourage were later hosted to a luncheon at the 9 Brigade Officers’ Mess, which was attended by officers and honorary members of the Brigade. The visit concluded with the presentation of souvenirs and group photographs, marking a successful and impactful engagement.
